Notes from the Director – September 2024

Autumn is here and that brings our Saints & Sinners Cemetery Tours in October. This year the tours are October 5th, October 12th and the Mausoleum tours on October 13th. Tickets can be purchased online and are going fast, so if you plan on attending, get your tickets! (The carriage tours are sold out, but you can have your name placed on a waiting list).

Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00 p.m. is our last Lecture Series for the year. The lecture is Vintage Tweets: Suffrage Era Postcards presented by Carol Crossed. Carol put this book together to be released in conjunction with the opening of the National Woman Suffrage Centennial in Seneca Falls, NY. The Centennial marked the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, granting women the right to vote. Her entertaining narrative explores the meaning behind the illustrations on the postcards, which represent both domestic and political views of the woman’s vote.
At the Fenton History Center is a small exhibit dedicated to suffragettes and some history on Jamestown’s AVM company. On display are some examples of voting machines made by AVM. The exhibit will be on display through November 6th. The next exhibit will be “On the Home Front,” a dedication to everyone who supported our men and women who served during World War II. The exhibit will open November 9th and run through February 2025.

This is my last “Notes from the Director.” Friday, October 18th will be my last day as Executive Director of the Fenton History Center. It has been a pleasure meeting our members and working with our staff and volunteers. The Fenton History Center has an amazing group of volunteers who support the staff and makes it difficult leaving all of you! I am confident that the Fenton History Center will continue to move forward and do great things. Joni Blackman, volunteer and previous Director of the Fenton, will be filling in as Interim Executive Director, so, I know that I am leaving the Fenton History Center in good hands.
