Notes from the Director – March 2025

We wrapped up trivia at Shawbucks a few days ago. It was great to see all the returning teams. The overall champion team, Effin Judo Chop, has won many of the 10 years we have been doing this event. Thank you to our Trivia Master, Guilia Sowrey and Kurt Johnson, owner of Shawbucks for their efforts to make this a successful time.

February was a busy month of planning for the year. The monthly lectures and summer walking tours are all set up. We will be featuring two Lake View Cemetery tours this summer: one about Pillars of the Community and the other is a Heroes tour. In addition, we will be taking a tour of trolley car #93. The long range plan is to eventually provide a place for the trolley on the Hall House property.

The lectures range from the Supreme Court to one of our beloved historians, Arthur Wellington Anderson. All the presentations are interesting. The first is on Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Vince Martonis will tell us about the local pottery history.

Planning is underway for the Chautauqua County History Expo – a new history fair! Save the date for August 23. We hope to have historical organizations from across Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties and our neighbors in Warren County PA telling their stories and displaying unique artifacts. There will be food trucks, speakers, book sales and lots of new and old friends.

The museum and research center will be closed for the first two weeks of March for cleaning, organizing and planning. The “On the Homefront” exhibit will be coming down and a small pottery exhibit will be up in time for Mr. Martonis’ lecture. Planning is underway for a summer exhibit about Jamestown’s Founding Fathers and Mothers.

Remember we have a Celtic Concert on March 12 at 7 p.m. Past Director Jane Babinsky, a member of the Wee Pipes Group of the 96 Highlanders will bring us into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit with their lively music. There is limited space, please come early. Doors will open at 6:30.
See you at the Fenton!
