Volunteers and I have been busy taking down the “Christmas on the Homefront” exhibit this past couple of weeks. It’s always surprising how fast an exhibit comes down compared to how long it takes to install the same exhibit. The “On the Homefront” exhibit will remain open until February 28. There is a lot of information on local soldiers, sailors and their families in the exhibition. Please stop by if you are able.
February is Trivia at Shawbucks month! This fundraiser is in its 10th year. Come over to Shawbucks at 212 W. 2nd St., Jamestown for dinner before the fun competition starts at 7 p.m. Teams of 2-6 will compete to win $100 each Wednesday in February with the grand prize of $200 to the team with the most points at the end of the month. It’s a fun time. In between rounds, prizes will be given for knowing your local history.
Please plan on coming to the very interesting and timely talk and book signing on February 22 at 2 p.m. by Christopher Carosa, author of History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of Greater Western New York. We will have books to purchase. Plans are underway to celebrate Lafayette’s 1824-1825 grand tour of America from May 30 to June 6 in the north part of the county.
The Fenton Mansion will be closed for the first two weeks of March for the annual cleaning and repairs. If you are interested in helping us do this gigantic task, please let me know. In anticipation of Vincent Martonis’ talk, “Pottery of Chautauqua County,” on April 9 a local pottery exhibit will be installed when the museum reopens on Monday, March 17th.
Get ready for St. Patrick’s Day by attending our March 12th Celtic Music Concert. The concert is free and open to all. Feel free to wear your plaid and your kilt!
There is never a dull day at the Fenton History Center!
Thank you to those who have renewed your membership or joined for the first time. Please use your membership this year; attend our talks and events, do some research, tour the museum, and share the Fenton with your friends and family.
See you soon!
