From the Director’s Desk – December 2024

It has been a whirlwind of activity at the museum and research center since I arrived in October. Between finishing the basement project in the Hall House Research Center and mounting two exhibits back to back plus hosting many events, I haven’t had time to do to many “director” things. Thank goodness for our tremendous staff and volunteers who know what to do and when to do it!

The Fenton Gift Shop is brimming with stocking stuffers, ornaments, local history books and toys. If you are a member, you receive 10% off your purchase and you help the Fenton out! Win win.

The holiday exhibit, “Christmas On the Homefront”, is open through February. It teaches about the war time holiday, wartime weddings, Lucille Ball’s War Bond sales work, and the struggles and accomplishment of our Jamestown residents at work and at home on behalf of the war effort. The exhibit also teaches about Victorian era traditions, and religious and cultural celebrations during the holiday season. When you come in to see the mansion-wide exhibit, stop in and say “hi”.

I am sorry to say we will be postponing our book signing event for Saturday, December 14 because the author has had a death in the family. We will welcome Mr. Carosa in the new year. I look forward to reading “History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of the Greater Western New York Region”.
The Fenton History Center will be closed both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and January 1st.

From all of us; Joni, Barb, Andrew, Matthew and the Board of Trustees, to all of you, we wish you a joyous holiday season.

Why give to the Fenton Annual Fund?

By now you should have received your annual appeal letter from myself and our Board President Janet Wahlberg. This year we are in need of support for the collections. The artifacts need acid free boxes. The paper collections, special collections, need acid free boxes and folders. The clothing and textiles need acid free paper and boxes. AND they all need shelving. We are always working to improve and provide the best environment for your donations.

Please know we value your support. Without your financial support we cannot do our job in a timely manner.
