Curator’s Corner – July 2022

Happy 203rd Birthday Governor Reuben Fenton! Governor Fenton was born on July 4, 1819. This year we celebrated with a float in the Mayville 4th of July Parade. We were also thrilled to be able to include our first Soldier’s Friend Scholarship Award winner, Brianna Rosequist, and have the Governor provide her with a giant check! In addition, the Fenton won first prize for our float!

July is another busy month at the Fenton. On Saturday, July 16, is the Fenton Buildings and Grounds Walking Tour. This was rescheduled from July 9. If you have ever wondered about the construction of our three-story brick mansion, or about how the Fentons lived, join us for this exciting tour starting at 10 AM.

On the evening of Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30 PM we will be welcoming author William Walsh and his friend Steven Corey for an author interview. Bill was raised in Jamestown and Lakewood and has now written a novel set in our very own Lakewood NY. Join us for an interview and book signing, and learn more about what inspired this book, the writing process, and more! There will be a questions and answers session as well.

On Saturday, July 23 at 10 a.m. you can join us for a tour of the Jamestown Riverwalk. This educational tour covers the history of the river and many of the buildings and industries that were built around it. The tour starts in front of the National Comedy Center.

We are excited to bring back our Inside Jamestown Churches tour for the first time since the pandemic. On July 30 we will be giving guests the opportunity to learn more about, and get a peek inside four area churches. The tour will start at 10 AM at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church at 1011 West Third St Jamestown, then visit Temple Hesed Abraham at Bethel Lutheran Church, the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and then Saint Elia Albanian Orthodox Church.

For more information or to register for any of these events please check our website at     fentonhistorycenter.org, or call us at 716-664-6256 or visit us at the Fenton History Center at 67 Washington Street Jamestown.
