On February 22, 2025, the Fenton History Center welcomed author Christopher Carosa for a book signing and discussion on his latest work, History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of the Greater Western New York Region. The event, free and open to the public, brought in a curious audience interested in learning more about Lafayette’s travels through Western New York.
Carosa, an award-winning author and Deputy Historian of Mendon, NY, shared insights from his research, highlighting Lafayette’s encounters with Native American tribes, early settlers, and key historical moments that shaped the region. His book, part of the Greater Western New York History series, details Lafayette’s stops in Westfield, Fredonia, and Dunkirk during his 1825 tour.
The event was part of the ongoing recognition of the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit. A committee is currently working on ways to commemorate his time in Chautauqua County.
