Notes from the Director – June 2025

By the time you receive this newsletter the first Historic Walking Tour of the season will have taken place. Volunteer extraordinaire Cindy Dustin led the first Churches Tour that included Saints Peter and Paul, Emanual Temple and Christ First UMC. A good group attended and raved about the tour.
The second historic walking tour is June 7, Jamestown’s Hidden Alleys tour. The tour is filled with stories about what has happened in the alleys over the years. Please register online or by calling the Fenton. It’s a fun tour!

Other tours during the month cover Jamestown’s industrial past, the beautiful southside neighborhood and the last tour of the month, is in Lake View Cemetery with our Veterans project manager Barb Cessna. Barb will tell the stories of several veterans in the cemetery. It’s always an inspiring tour! Please see the full list for the season in the newsletter.

A tornado is coming! The next exhibit will open June 10 with “The 1945 Jamestown Tornado” that devastated the Brooklyn Square area of Jamestown in under three minutes. It’s a video exhibit of the wide variety of pictures from the event. The exhibit will open on Thursday, June 11, with a special time to meet the curator, Tom Goodwill, at 7:00 p.m. The “The 1945 Jamestown Tornado” video will be shown following his talk.

Are you ready? The 20th Annual Saints & Sinners Lake View Cemetery Tours are coming the first two Saturdays in October. We need sponsors, supporters, tour guides, cookie sellers and actors. If you are interested – please contact me! This is going to be a great year to learn our local history.

The Fenton History Center has a great bunch of volunteers that help in the research center, the gift shop, and with many projects. We are starting a volunteer management committee to make sure we value every volunteer and make the best use of their time. If you are thinking about volunteering at the Fenton, please let us know. We couldn’t manage without our volunteers.

FINALLY – put the Giv Big CHQ online fundraising event on your calendar for June 12. We need your donations to win big prizes! We are raising funds to hire a part-time educator. We need your help!!!! If you choose to donate $500 or more, we are offering a private cruise on Chautauqua Lake in a fully restored antique cruiser! More details can be found here in the newsletter, on the website, www.fentonhistorycenter.org, and on future emails.

Thank you for all you do for your local history. We couldn’t tell our stories with you!
