Notes from the Director – July 2025

Happy Birthday America!  I hope you had a good holiday, shared some good meals with family and friends and took some time to rest.

The first walking tour of the month is on July 12 in Lake View Cemetery.  Janet Wahlberg will tell the stories of some of the families buried by pillar-style monuments which is why it’s named the “Pillars of the Community” tour.

On July 19th, we will meet in Falconer at the Ideal Coatings garage to see the progress made on the #93 Trolley.  For over 25 years, Bob Johnston has been passionately restoring the trolley with dedicated volunteers.  Please join us and learn about our early transportation.

The last tour is the Industrial Footprint of Jamestown given by Tom Goodwill.  This is essentially a tour of the Brooklyn Square area highlighting the early industry that took place there.  Register for any of the walking tours at fentonhistorycenter.org/events.

I hope you can join us on Sunday afternoon, July 13 for the RELIVE July 1865 event.  We will learn about how Jamestown celebrated the end of the Civil War.  Re-enactors, refreshments and some great stories about July 4, 1865 will be shared.  Feel free to wear your hoop skirt or top hat, or both!

Also, if you are a volunteer here at the Fenton – we have over 70 regular volunteers – you are invited to the volunteer appreciation picnic on July 13.  You should have received an email invite.  Let us know you are coming!

The Fenton will be represented well at the Scandinavian Festival, July 19-20, at the Northwest Arena.  We will have a genealogy table and we are loaning artwork to the community art show.  We have loaned a mural painted by local painter Albert Johnson which hung in the Norden Club when it was on Second St.  It has been hidden away for years.  You can see it at the Scandinavian Festival!

Stop in with your visiting family, or sneak away by yourself, to see the summer exhibits, “From the Rapids to Jamestown: 1806-1815” and “Jamestown’s 1945 Tornado”.

Hope to see you soon.
