For some, it seems like only yesterday that the tornado struck along the Chadakoin River valley. Nope, that’s not very true. The tornado struck on June 10, 1945 (just after the end of World War II in Europe, when we collectively started breathing a little easier). Very few Jamestowners who would remember the event are alive today.
At the risk of being redundant, and in deference to Cindy Dustin’s fine work on the subject, I’ll simply mention the event here. I have created a brief video of the event, running about eighteen minutes. It will be available for viewing in the Fenton Mansion, with a first official viewing at 7:00 PM on June 11. The video features around 100 photos that were taken the day after the storm struck. The photos came to me from various collectors. Some were taken by private individuals, others were taken by local photographers, who then sold copies.
We at The Fenton are also working on research and scripts for our annual Saints & Sinners Tour at Lakeview Cemetery. Although the event is a few months off, we’ve learned that our carriage tours sell out quickly. You may wish to plan ahead for that. Each year, we try to create our tours around different individuals than those featured in tours of recent years, and we’re open to suggestions.
Now that summery weather appears to be here to stay, we’re turning our attention to the outdoors. Got a green thumb? We can use help with flower gardens. Got a strong back? We can always use your help moving items. We can also use volunteers to mow, using our equipment, to make our shared load a little lighter. If you’re more inclined to inside work, we have plenty to do indoors. I learned recently that we have SIXTY-FIVE volunteers helping us, and we so appreciate the help! Some volunteers come in one day a week, some more often, some less often. All are greatly appreciated. Call or stop by, if you’re interested.
