What is it? – August 2025

No, it’s not a fossil. It is about 14” at its’ widest point. If you tap the turtles head with your foot, the shell opens to reveal a place for a small bowl. Used frequently by gentlemen. It is called a spittoon, which is a receptacle designed for spitting into, historically used for disposing of saliva, particularly from chewing tobacco. The base is made from cast iron while the turtle shell is some type of unidentified metal.
