The Fenton History Center’s July lecture featured Wendy Lewellen, board member and secretary of Chautauqua Rails to Trails, who shared stories and history from her book Good Soles: Chautauqua Rails to Trails, Namesakes and Trailblazers.
Lewellen, a native of western New York, discussed the work of Chautauqua Rails to Trails, a volunteer organization that maintains a 30-mile system of former railroad properties converted into recreational trails in the westernmost corner of New York State. Her presentation highlighted the history of the organization and the dedication of its volunteers, along with the specific trails named after several different individuals.

Using photographs and research from her book, Lewellen highlighted the people and stories behind the trail network, showing how it developed into both a recreational space and a reflection of local history.
The lecture, part of the 2025 Fenton History Center Lecture Series, took place in the dining room of the Fenton Mansion and was also streamed live on Facebook.
The next lecture will be held on Wednesday, August 13 at 1 p.m. Janet Wahlberg will present on John Henry Mann, Chautauqua County’s first casualty of World War II.
