Joseph Ellicott: A Historical Portrayal

On June 11, the Fenton History Center welcomed guests for a special midday program featuring a historical portrayal of Joseph Ellicott by Dennis Upton. Upton, a retired elementary teacher and seasoned performer, brought the famed surveyor of Western New York to life, transporting the audience back to the early 19th century.

In character as Ellicott, Upton used maps and artifacts to illustrate the pivotal role the Holland Land Company played in shaping the region. He emphasized Ellicott’s impact on organizing the wilderness of early New York and his instrumental support in bringing the Erie Canal to Western New York.

The event, free and open to the public, was part of the Fenton’s ongoing lecture series. The next program will take place on July 9, featuring author Wendy Lewellen.
