Curator Snippets: Korean War Uniform

The Fenton History Center’s Military Room features the naval uniform of Edwin N. Nelson Jr., from the Korean War. Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954. He was the Machinist Mate 2nd Class of the USS Braine DD630. He lived in Lakewood, New York, and was a volunteer firefighter for over seventy years. Past Lakewood Fire Chief, Kurt Hallberg, has been quoted by the Post-Journal as saying that Edwin Nelson “was the kind of person who would drop whatever he was doing and help others”. Mr. Nelson was the First Assistant Chief and also the Captain of the Fire Police. He died in Ashville, on July 25, 2022, at 92 years of age. His funeral was held in Busti. He was a devoted family man and his daughter, Tracy Emerson, donated this uniform, which is made of wool and cotton in true navy blue.
