Originally written in 1849 and published in 1881, this account of Henson's life as a slave and escape to Canada in 1830 after he was brutally mistreated. There he found work and started a community, a school and took up his preaching again. He tells of his early life and the hardships he endured as a slave all the way to his newfound life in Canada and a trip to England where he had a meeting with Queen Victoria. He is considered to be the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom.
